From the Crossroads Collective:
All mention of climate change has been officially removed from the White House website. Purging facts and peddling denial to put cash in the pockets of fossil fuel cronies is wrong!
Here in Buffalo/Western New York, we are NOT just going to stand by and let this happen. The Crossroads Collective is pushing Governor Cuomo, the NYS legislature, and NYS state regulators to go even further in the opposite direction, taking bold and urgent steps to combat the climate crisis, protect low-income people, people of color, immigrant/refugee communities, and create high-paying, living-wage, green jobs.
On February 8th, we're organizing a teach-in and info session at 6:00pm at 271 Grant Street in Buffalo to deepen our understanding of the climate and jobs crisis, discuss what's at stake in New York, and share how we can come together to take action around solutions that put people and planet first.
GET ON THE BUS!!!!!
Then on February 13th, we'll be converging in Albany NY (the state's capital) with allies from across the state to demand climate justice and equity for all New Yorkers! Here's the current plan:
A bus will depart Buffalo at 4:30am on Monday, February 13th. We will get to Albany in time to PACK a joint legislative Environmental Conservation Committee budget hearing with members of NY Renews, a statewide climate and jobs coalition. We’ll make it clear in the room that we expect to see language in the budget that advances the goals of the Climate and Community Protection Act (CCPA) put forth during the Obama administration: (a.) set into law a requirement that New York decarbonize (or take oil and gas burning fuels out of) its economy by 2050, (b.) allocate at least 40% of energy funding to front line communities - these are low-income/refugee/immigrant communities, and (c.) codify strong labor protections in clean renewable energy sectors. Around 10:30am, we’ll leave the hearing and hold a big press conference outside of the hearing room.
We're lining up opportunities to meet with WNY legislators throughout the morning to continue our advocacy around the CCPA, and we're exploring additional opportunities to engage the Public Service Commission and the Department of Environmental Conservation around proposals from National Fuel to hike gas rates and develop fracked gas pipelines in WNY.
We can’t let our leaders in Albany neglect serious action on climate and jobs at this critical moment, especially when other states are looking to NY to lead. Will you join us?
The resistance is strong, and it starts here in Western New York.
