From our friends at the Coalition for Economic Justice:
Join CEJ Buffalo as we celebrate a great year of struggle and wins. We will have dinner, drinks and dancing as well as honor some amazing people who have done great work this year both in the workplace and community. They are Jonet Rodolph, Miss Dennice Barr, Jeffrey Richardson, Alex Wright, and John Mudie. These people exemplify what it means to live into the CEJ Buffalo value of putting people over profits. You can purchase tickets online here https://goo.gl/KvbT2W and sponsor the event here https://goo.gl/bSwX2m
A good year!
We along with our partners created the first Community Controlled Land Trust in the Fruit Belt and the city of Buffalo has given us a commitment that they will give the land trust at least 50 properties. These properties will be controlled by average everyday people not money hungry developers who want to gentrify neighborhoods.
We also got the NFTA to extend bus service in Lackawanna to the weekends and into the evenings. Buffalo Transit Riders United #BTRU has been meeting with legislators in county, state and city government to ensure that riders have real power and voice on the NFTA board of commissioners. We know that when the people have the power the priorities of agencies like the NFTA change and we need better bus service that actually meets riders needs NOW!
We are also launching the WNY wing of the Poor People's Campaign and have grown out a coalition of organizations which include labor, religious and community groups that has already and will continue to raise the voice of poor and marginalized people in WNY. We realize that the quadruple evils of militarism, poverty, racism and ecological devastation all conspire against poor people and must be dismantled together. That is why come May we will be heading to Albany and Washington DC to raise poor people's voices in a cry that the nation will HEAR! Now is the time to push back on a far right nationalist agenda and the Poor People's Campaign is a movement that has the power to do just that.
