WNY Refugee Film Festival Screening #2: Double Feature!

DOUBLE FEATURE screening of "Renga for the West" & "The Refugees of Shangri-La.

"The Refugees of Shangri-La" is a stunning documentary so good we are bringing it back for those who missed it in 2015, as part of our Special Double Feature Night also featuring Renga for the West! Bhutan's international reputation precedes it as the Himalayan Kingdom of "Gross National Happiness." However, Bhutan's Nepali exiles will tell you a different story: one of cultural persecution, loss of a beloved home, a twenty-year wait in refugee camps and finally, a new chance in a new country. Over 85,000 Bhutanese refugees have resettled in America and thousands more in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other countries. This is the story of our new neighbors, "The Refugees of Shangri-La." We are thrilled to bring this film back to WNY in an encore presentation, and pair it with the Buffalo premiere of Renga for the West, which will make for a doubly enjoyable cinematic experience for the audience!

"Renga for the West" is a beautiful, moving, and heartfelt series of self-directed refugee short films, augmented with observational footage shot by the production team from their own perspectives as native-born Montanans. In 2016, Montana began resettling refugees for the first time in a century, many from the Democratic Republic of Congo. These are their stories, as told by them, through their voices and through their eyes. The New Neighbors Team is a collaboration between resettled refugee families and local filmmakers in Missoula, Montana. The music and films created were participant-driven and made possible with editing, recording, and translation assistance from Renga Media. "Renga for the West" is based on the idea of a "renga," a community-authored poem, and is being partnered with an encore screening of "Refugees of Shangri-La," to make for a very special double feature night at the movies for our audience!
