Phylicia Brown was born and raised in Buffalo, N.Y., and is a product of Buffalo Public Schools. In addition to her New York State teaching certification, she holds a master of science in education degree in Curriculum and Instruction and a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood and Childhood Education. She has served as a teacher, a full-time educational advocate, and a community organizer. Brown’s Democracy Fellows project seeks to bridge the gap between justice work and education; to engage students in a process that transforms them from learners to doers, builders, and leaders.
Says Brown, "Education outside of the realm of justice is not education at all; it is just school."
