Campaign Corner: Economic Justice Allies Under a New Name

The High Road Economic Development (HRED) Table has made significant strides over the past couple of months. Resident groups within the Fruit Belt, along with HRED Table allies from across Buffalo, have adopted the name "Community First Alliance" (CFA), in order to bring clarity and focus to their campaign to negotiate a Community Benefits Agreement with the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
In addition, a number of the CFA members participated in an intensive four-day certification program, led by the Community Health Worker Network of Buffalo, which provided a comprehensive look at the principles and practices of Community Health Workers, including how to engage in Asset-Based Community Development. A key takeaway from the training is that members of the CFA are now advocating for the inclusion of a Center for Health Equity in a finalized benefits agreement. The mission of this center would be to interact directly with the immediate community and reduce health disparities among low-income and disenfranchised communities.
Lastly, in preparation for the campaign launch this May, the CFA will host a series of community “teach-ins” at the Moot Center (292 High Street) over the next couple of months. The first one is set for Wednesday, March 9th at 5:30 p.m. Child care and food will be provided. Everyone is welcome.
