On April 16, 2024 the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center and P3 Center hosted their 3rd annual day of awareness & advocacy in recognition of Black Maternal Health Week. They invited Executive Director, Franchelle Parker to deliver the keynote address. She started out by doing a mindfulness meditation to allow the women to take a moment to just breath. It was a time for them to relax, focus and be intentional about their space. She talked about implicit bias, also known as implicit prejudice or implicit attitude, defined as a negative attitude, of which one is not consciously aware, against a specific social group. She shared experiences where implicit bias showed up in her own life and she emphasized the need for women to be comfortable with advocating for themselves. It was a great time for the women to share their stories in a safe space and receive validation and support on ways to receive better care from their healthcare providers.
