On Saturday, May 1, Open Buffalo hosted a “Know Your Rights” Cookout at Martin Luther King Jr. Park for the community to celebrate the passing of the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA) and learn what work still needs to be done! As we approach all of our work looking through a racial justice lens, we hosted the event at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
Like all of our community events, we kept the cookout free, fun, and informative. Those who came to the event enjoyed good vibes provided by local DJ King Shad, food freshly grilled by our team of volunteers, a bounce house for the kids (donated by a community partner), a live speech and meet-and-greet with Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, and swag bags loaded with useful information. This information included:
“What's legal and what's not under MRTA?”
“How can a ‘clean slate’ law help restore our people’s rights?
“Why should the super-wealthy pay more taxes in New York State?”
