Staff members of Congressman Tim Kennedy (D-NY26) participated in a special Race, Power, and Privilege anti-racism training on Thursday, September 5. Held in Buffalo’s Larkinville district, the group was comprised of staff from Kennedy’s Washington, D.C., and Buffalo district offices.
Exploring issues of Intersectionality, the History of Race, Honoring Indigenous Nations, among others, participants were challenged by Dr. Kush K Bhardwaj (Director of Racial Equity and Justice) and Franchelle Parker (Executive Director) to examine how biases and prejudice connect to greater problems of racism. The group critiqued the complexities of institutionalized discrimination and systemic racism, discussing how to effect change in their district.
Rep. Kennedy is among a vanguard of public officials who fight to keep the memory of the May 14th victims alive, having delivered remarks on the floor of Congress in their memory. Kennedy remains an advocate of the East Side community, not only denouncing racism in its varied forms, but taking intentional steps to understand its causes and effects.
Open Buffalo salutes the Congressman for having his staff do “the difficult work” of anti-racism training.
