Open Buffalo Launches Ecology Center Capital Campaign!

The Open Buffalo Ecology Center is a 10-acre urban refuge that will be housed on Buffalo’s East Side. It will offer the ample green space, outdoor recreation, educational opportunities, and community-building spaces and activities intended to correct the financial and physical harms inflicted upon Black bodies amid decades of environmental racism, systematic disinvestment, and a worsening climate crisis.
Over the past two years, we have been working in earnest with our Eco Collective (a dozen allied community leaders, activists, artists, and academics) to bring our envisioned campus from ideation into reality. Today, we proceed to a pivotal new chapter in this story – the launch of our 2024 Eco Center Capital Campaign! We're already in deep conversation with dozens of residents and community stakeholders to refine the components of our center, and the campus surrounding it. On the drawing board are:
- Green sector work force development
- Ample green space to promote community wellness and recreation
- Environmental education
- Indoor recreation center
- Large-scale event space
- Food growing spaces
- Accommodations for nature retreats
Over the next 12 months, we will be sharing opportunities to support and engage in the work of brining Land, Liberation, and Ecological Justice here to Buffalo's East Side! During this campaign, we are excited to continue building a firm foundation of community solidarity, access, and power with you!
