On February 28, Open Buffalo’s Youth Action team led a civic engagement training, “Train for a Change,” for the Erie-Niagara AHEC PATCH Teen Educators.
Employing curriculum developed by Youth Action member and Emerging Leader (2018) Temara Cross and further developed by the Youth Action Core Team, the training covered topics such as public narrative (Story of Self) and articulating your “why,” outreach strategies for successful community engagement activities, keeping in contact and keeping leaders activated throughout a campaign, and self-care strategies to keep morale and motivation up.
The team, including Byron Chavis (20), Temara Cross (23), MyQuan Greer (21), Jontae Griffin (20), Jordan Jackson (22), and Abby Zhu (15), is excited to share with their peers what they have learned over the past few years doing community engagement and advocacy work. This training is available to youth groups throughout the Buffalo area. The Youth Action training team will also lead workshops during Open Buffalo’s Power Up Boot Camp: Community Organizing for the Change Generation, ages 14-24, which will take place June 26-30.
