I believe Muhammad Ali to be one of the greatest athletes to ever live. His life, both in and out of the ring, represented a deep wonder and power that were unmatched. Never, never, ever, ever would I have gotten into a ring with him. Never would I have sat outside the ring and taunted him, throwing things at him. Maybe, just maybe he would ignore it, but would YOU be willing to take the chance?
That’s what we humans for over century have been doing to the Earth — taunting her, polluting her, taking away what she needs to protect herself. Hurricane Milton and these superstorms are what it looks like for the Earth to fight back. She’s swinging back with a fury that we don’t have the skill or power to handle. Soon, in Buffalo we will enter our superstorm season as well. It almost feels like all we can do is watch the news, pray for another part of the country and send money or water if we can.
But NO. We have science and the will of the people that can in fact begin to make a difference.
We can’t allow climate deniers and corporations obsessed with the accumulation of greater wealth to continue down this path of unrestricted production of waste, burning of fossil fuels, and the exploitation of people of color.
Our very lives depend on sensible policies that start to correct the harms of the past and set us on the right path for the future. Register to vote. Register 10 other people to vote. Create a voter action plan and stick to it. If we continue to get into the ring with Mother Earth, we know who will win.
