On Saturday, May 8, Open Buffalo’s Youth Action (YA) hosted a “Save our Children” Community Town Hall. The YA leaders wanted to raise awareness around the narrative that labels missing children of color as “runaways” and how amber alerts are racialized. They also wanted to offer a space for community members to share their ideas about what else can be done to save our youth. We had 15 people in attendance, and all who were present participated in a lively conversation – either sharing their disgust with what is happening in the community and city (mentioning how we need to take more action and have less meetings) or brainstorming how we can partner together to generate more change in the upcoming months. All who attended expressed that they would attend a human trafficking training and are ready to move forward with another town hall meeting, with hopes of taking action.
Stay tuned for future updates as YA’s Save our Children campaign progresses. If you would like to learn more or get involved, please contact Open Buffalo Youth Organizer Devon Patterson at devon@openbuffalo.org.
